More tourist beds than residents

Barcelona registers 83,454 hotel beds for 1,713,247 registered residents, where the median across our towns is 304. The place fills with people who do not live here, and a good share of the summer callouts are exactly that: holiday flats where the key belongs to an owner nobody can reach, doors that shut themselves with the luggage inside, hire cars with the keys still in them. In those cases the lock is not the first question — the first question is who is entitled to have it opened, because without that nobody touches the door.

A dense city, where parking is part of the journey

Barcelona has 16,904 people per km², against 1,535 across the towns we cover. In a city like this the arrival time is not decided by the road, it is decided by the last hundred metres: getting there is easy, parking is not. That is why emergencies go by motorbike, and it is not a brochure line — it is the difference between leaving it at your door and circling the block in a van while somebody waits on the landing.

A lot of renting, and cylinders that change hands

31.1 % of the main homes in Barcelona are rented, against a 18.5 % median. Where there is a lot of renting the most repeated job is not an emergency at all: it is the cylinder change between one tenant and the next, booked in advance and done in half an hour. It always brings the same question, so here it is. The owner can ask for it once the property is free. The tenant can change it during the contract, but has to leave the lock as it was — or hand over a copy — when they go. And for an opening, a rental contract in your name is perfectly good proof of address.

¿Cuánto tardáis en llegar a Barcelona?

¿Cuánto cuesta apertura de vehículos en Barcelona?

¿Y si al final resulta que no hay que hacer nada?

El desplazamiento con diagnóstico y sin trabajo son 49 €, y se te dice antes de que salga nadie, así que no hay sorpresa al final. Si el problema se puede resolver por WhatsApp, se resuelve por WhatsApp y no cuesta nada.

¿Venís de noche y en festivos?

Sí, 24 horas todo el año. La tarifa de noche y la de festivo son más altas que un martes por la mañana, y se te dice cuál se aplica cuando escribes. No hay recargo escondido.

Estoy en un apartamento turístico en Barcelona. ¿Podéis abrirlo?

Sólo con el propietario o la agencia detrás: quien autoriza que se abra esa puerta es quien responde de la vivienda, no quien pasa la semana en ella, y ningún cerrajero que trabaje legalmente puede saltárselo. Mándanos el contacto por WhatsApp y hablamos nosotros con ellos; suele ser un mensaje. Si la lleva una agencia, contestan antes de lo que la gente espera, porque la cerradura es suya.

¿Dónde vais a aparcar? Estoy en un bloque sin sitio en la puerta.

Por eso las urgencias van en moto. En un sitio tan denso como Barcelona los últimos cien metros deciden el tiempo de llegada mucho más que la carretera, y una furgoneta dando vueltas es tiempo que tú pasas en el rellano. Para instalaciones con cita sí hace falta la furgoneta, así que se acuerda una hora en la que haya dónde dejarla.
