What Barcelona is actually like to work in

A lot of renting, and cylinders that change hands

31.1 % of the main homes in Barcelona are rented, against a 18.5 % median. Where there is a lot of renting the most repeated job is not an emergency at all: it is the cylinder change between one tenant and the next, booked in advance and done in half an hour. It always brings the same question, so here it is. The owner can ask for it once the property is free. The tenant can change it during the contract, but has to leave the lock as it was — or hand over a copy — when they go. And for an opening, a rental contract in your name is perfectly good proof of address.

More tourist beds than residents

Barcelona registers 83,454 hotel beds for 1,713,247 registered residents, where the median across our towns is 304. The place fills with people who do not live here, and a good share of the summer callouts are exactly that: holiday flats where the key belongs to an owner nobody can reach, doors that shut themselves with the luggage inside, hire cars with the keys still in them. In those cases the lock is not the first question — the first question is who is entitled to have it opened, because without that nobody touches the door.

How much is lock replacement in Barcelona?

From 99 €, VAT included. The final amount depends on the hour, the day and the type of lock, and you get it in full on WhatsApp before anyone sets off. The distance to Barcelona is not added to the price — the rate is the same across all the towns we cover.

What if it turns out nothing needs doing?

A call-out with diagnosis and no work done is 49 €, and you are told that before anyone leaves, so there is no surprise at the end. If the problem can be solved over WhatsApp, we solve it over WhatsApp and it costs nothing.

Do you come out at night and on public holidays?

Yes, 24 hours a year round. The night and holiday rates are higher than a Tuesday morning, and you are told which one applies when you message. There is no hidden surcharge.

I am staying in a holiday flat in Barcelona. Can you open it?

Only with the owner or the agency behind it — a booking confirmation is not the same as being entitled to have a lock opened, and no locksmith working legally can treat it as such. Send us the booking and the contact and we deal with them directly; it is usually one message. If the flat is managed by an agency they nearly always answer faster than you would expect, because it is their lock.

Where will you park? I am in a block with no space outside.

That is exactly why emergencies go by motorbike. In a place as dense as Barcelona the last hundred metres decide the arrival time far more than the road does, and a van circling for a space is time you spend on the landing. For booked installation work we do need the van, so we agree a time when there is somewhere to leave it.
